Over the Hill Birthday Party Ideas
First of all, let us address the question of at what age is it appropriate for an over the hill birthday party? The whole premise of an over the hill party is that the birthday individual is now considered to be “old.” We all know that being “old” is a state of mind and this is obviously up to each individual, but I think it is most appropriate for 40 or 50-year-olds. This is just my own opinion; you can throw an over the hill birthday party for a 30-year-old or a 60-year-old too.
Make sure the birthday person would enjoy this type of party and will have a good sense of humor surrounding it. The last thing you want to do is make someone feel bad, so if you are unsure, you may want to stick with just a simple 40th or 50th birthday party without all of the extra measures to poke fun at the person’s age. Since you most likely have already considered this and are therefore looking for over the hill party ideas, we have provided some fun ones in this article.
Just because you’re turning four (or five) decades old, doesn’t mean that you can’t party and have fun! “Over-the-hill” themed parties leave room for creativity and unique ideas to make birthdays for adults enjoyable for everyone.
Decorations and Party Favors
As with most party themes, you can usually find excellent supplies at your local craft or party store. You can find things like stickers, banners, balloons, party hats, plates and napkins, and even costumes all themed to fit an over-the-hill party theme. Some party stores will also carry board games and music set to fit the mood. You can decorate with black balloons and other party decorations.
Over the hill candy wrappers make great party favors. You can give these 50th birthday party favors out to all your guests. You can include a picture of the honoree who is turning 50 (or 40 – as they can easily be used for either). There are milestone birthday candy wrapper designs for any year you want. These are among our most popular birthday designs and are sure to be a hit at your party.
Party Food Ideas Sticking with the Over the Hill Theme
As far as food goes, you will want to stick with your over the hill theme and serve items labeled with cute sayings and names reflecting this theme. The possibilities are limitless, but here are some ideas to get you thinking in this way:
You can serve any type of punch and label it the fountain of youth.
You can make dessert cups of pudding and crumbled Oreos on top with gummy worms and a little sign on each container that says “Old as Dirt.”
Another amusing treat is to fill a bowl with lollipops and put a sign on it that says, “Getting Old Sucks.”
You can bake your tasty treats at a pretty low cost. You can take a regular cupcake or cake mix and add food coloring to make it black to fit your theme. Or, you can bake a white cake and use black frosting. Try writing a personal message on the cake or decorate each cupcake with the number 40 or little tombstones. I’ve even seen some beautiful cakes that had a picture of the birthday picture when they were younger and a photo of them in the present day.
Over the Hill Gifts
You can put together a unique gift basket for the special birthday person. Try putting themed items in the basket such as movies from the year the birthday person was born, black candy and food, a cane, a fake will with a funny message in it, or you can even get custom made t-shirts and hats that say “over-the-hill” or the person’s name.
Other Party Ideas
You can also add something sentimental to a silly party theme. For your birthday person, try putting together a time capsule for them to enjoy. Fill it with messages pre-gathered from close friends family, their favorite non-perishable food, and anything time related to the year you celebrate your party. This will make a fun item to enjoy on the next birthdays to come.
Another great way to celebrate is to create a collage or an area where you put photos of the honoree through the years. This is an excellent way to celebrate any birthday. It is fun for everyone to look at these photos. You can even add memorabilia from the time period when the birthday person grew up.
You can also play music from the 70’s for a person turning 50 this year. Or from whatever time period depending on the age of the birthday you are celebrating. If you happen to have a record player and some albums from the 70’s you can play these on the record player throughout the party.
Another fun activity party guests can participate in is to sing Karaoke, but with one catch, the song has to be from the ’70s (or whatever decade the birthday person grew up during). Karaoke will be a lively and memorable activity that most guests will love participating in. You can have groups of singers for those who want to join but do not want to sing by themselves.
It doesn’t matter how you decide to put your over-the-hill party together as long as you have fun and remember to celebrate!
